RANGE DESCRIPTION
This species is distributed in eastern continental China (including Yunnan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hainan, Guangxi, and Guangdong - Yang and Rao 2008, B. Cai pers. comm. 2018), the southern Korean Peninsula, and Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and peripheral islets). It is absent from Taiwan. Subpopulations in eastern (and possibly the entirety of) Japan might be non-native (Toda and Yoshida 2005, Toda et al. 2006). It is found at elevation 850–2,030 m asl (Yang and Rao 2008, B. Cai pers. comm. 2018).

Habitat and Ecology
In Japan this species occurs mainly in urban areas. In western Kyusyu, it also occurs in rocky habitats near the coast (Sengoku 1996). In China the species inhabits forests and urban areas, it is found in crevices of building walls. A female specimen was found carrying two eggs in May (Zhao et al. 1999, Yang and Rao 2008).

Conservation Actions Information
There are no known species-specific conservation measures in place for this species. It is found in many protected areas. Further research is required to clarify whether this species is native or exotic in Japan. In China, this species is listed in the "List of Beneficial or of Important Economic or Scientific Value Terrestrial Wild Animals under States Protection", under the protection of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Wildlife" (B. Cai pers. comm. 2018).
