RANGE DESCRIPTION
This widespread species ranges from Madagascar and east Africa, to the Red Sea, Australia to China, and east across the Pacific to Hawaii, Cocos Island, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, Equador, and Columbia.

This is not a common species, and is easily misidentified with H. arenicola. It occurs in low densities.

Habitat and Ecology

In Kenya, this species prefers to be burrowed under coral rubble or blocks (Muthiga et al. 2007). In the Comores, it inhabits shallow waters (between 0 and 10m) over blocks of coral or buried in the coral rubble (Samyn et al. 2006).
