This species is widespread in the Indian and tropical Pacific, and is uncommon. It is not widely fished, and there are no other known threats. It is listed as Least Concern.
In Kenya, this species prefers to be burrowed under coral rubble or blocks (Muthiga et al. 2007). In the Comores, it inhabits shallow waters (between 0 and 10m) over blocks of coral or buried in the coral rubble (Samyn et al. 2006).
