Habitat and Ecology

This species inhabits subtropical hills at low elevations within mountain ranges. It is found in grassland and shrubland habitats and feeds on small arthropods such as mealworms and spiders. It enters hibernation when the temperature drops below 11° C in November; and becomes active during April and May. Breeding takes place during May and August and females lay clutches of 2–6 eggs in June. The hatching period is 38–44 days. (Zhao et al. 1999; Y.Z. Wang pers. comm. 2018).
